LFP vs Lead‑Acid: Weight, Usable Capacity & ROI

LFP vs Lead-Acid: Weight, Usable Capacity & ROI

Keyphrase: LiFePO4 vs lead-acid

1. Usable Capacity: Depth of Discharge

The biggest difference in LiFePO4 vs lead-acid is usable capacity.
A typical lead-acid battery should not be discharged below 50% DoD for long life.
In contrast, LiFePO4 can safely deliver 80–90% of its rated capacity without
significant degradation. That means a 100Ah LFP pack delivers 80–90Ah reliably,
while a 100Ah lead-acid gives only ~50Ah in practice.

This higher usable capacity translates into smaller, lighter battery banks for
the same usable energy.

2. Weight & Energy Density

Lead-acid is much heavier per unit of energy. A 12V 100Ah lead-acid battery
weighs 28–30 kg, while a LiFePO4 equivalent is ~12 kg. For mobile and off-grid
applications, this weight savings makes a huge difference in installation and transport.

Higher energy density also means less space used per kWh stored.

3. Cycle Life & Total Lifetime Energy

A deep-cycle lead-acid might last 500–800 cycles at 50% DoD. LiFePO4 commonly
reaches 3000–5000 cycles at 80% DoD. This means an LFP pack can deliver
5–7x more lifetime energy than a comparable lead-acid bank.

When comparing LiFePO4 vs lead-acid, lifetime energy throughput is
the key ROI driver.

4. Return on Investment (ROI)

While lead-acid batteries are cheaper upfront, their short life and limited usable
capacity increase long-term costs. LFP packs may cost 2–3x more initially,
but when measured in cost per kWh delivered over their lifetime, they usually win.

Example:
– 100Ah lead-acid (50Ah usable × 600 cycles) ≈ 30,000 Ah lifetime.
– 100Ah LiFePO4 (80Ah usable × 3000 cycles) ≈ 240,000 Ah lifetime.
→ 8× more delivered energy.

5. Maintenance & Reliability

Lead-acid requires ventilation, periodic equalization, and is sensitive to
partial-state-of-charge. LiFePO4 is virtually maintenance-free and handles
partial charging better.

6. Where Each Makes Sense

  • Lead-Acid: Lowest upfront cost, standby backup (rare discharge), limited budgets.
  • LiFePO4: Off-grid systems, solar storage, RV/marine, frequent cycling, weight-sensitive use.
